2021.10.15 22:49 hitsugan Is it just me or are the finales for each act underwhelming?
The game is great and I have no complaints about the level design itself, but to me it seems the finales are very underwhelming compared to the rest of the acts, especially the missions that lead to them. Anticlimactic would be the best word, as the tensions builds up and then the final levels are just meh. I know they are supposed to be "boss fights" instead of regular levels but still.
The Sound of Thunder is fun and all, but after Abandoned where you're climbing and destroying the mine entrances to stop ridden spawns it seems shallow. You dump razor wire around the howitzer, get all the rounds and throw them at the floor around the howitzer at the start and then just hold. It's fairly quick and hardly a challenge compared to the rest of the act. I'll give it some points because it has a different mechanic (howitzer).
Grave Danger is actually ok, but that's also due to the fact that both Heralds of the Worm levels are quick and underwhelming. So killing the snitches (and hordes) and the breakers is actually a challenge, but overall doesn't feel like a boss fight, just more of the same (because the game is chaotic all the time). The shrinking zone is a cool addition to this one but didn't stand out on its own, at least to me.
The Body Dump has the cool T5 Grenade mechanic which makes you feel like a god. But overall I found the level very easy, especially easy compared to The Road to Hell which comes right before this one. Coordinating properly in those tiny spaces was much more difficult than the open space in the finale, even with all the ogres and specials (T5 had them melting in seconds). I literally said "That's it?" after finishing the level as we were sweating in the previous one.
This one is fine, it's an actual boss fight with a set of mechanics that make the fight interesting and, most importantly, different than a regular level. If they had something like this for every act it would be much more interesting, just to make it a little more diverse.
So I don't know if it's just me, but after being pumped for over an hour playing the whole act just to reach the final level and find more of the same or be done with it in 5 minutes was underwhelming. Maybe it's just my impression but from the people I played with I sensed a similar feeling.
The finales aren't bad, they just feel out of place as a proper finale. I expected an epic conclusion and was met with more of the same.

2021.10.15 22:49 StevenK71 The TV show has nuggets
One of the most amazing things in this adaptation is that it's an ordinary show adorned with trinkets and nuggets from the books: - The empire is huge, strong and very alive. Nugget is the name of the emperors - Emperor's palace is a medieval lord's castle. The nugget is the palace gardens whereas the rest of the planet is a big city - Robots are cool, let's have some. Nugget is a robot name they happen to have IP rights - Religion is as religion does. Nugget is the prophecies of Harry Sheldon - Psychohistory is magic. Nugget is the projector - The Foundation is an exile camp. Nugget is the vault - The neighborhing states of Terminus are post-apocalyptic survivors. Nugget is their names (Anacreon etc)
In other words, we have a strong empire (with internal problems as all such states) with the emperors living as medieval lords medling with religion, where the emperor's wizard prophesied bad things and was sent into exile along with its acolytes, where they struggle with local post-apocalyptic survivors headed by a Tina Turner Thunderdome antagonist. Interesting? Maybe. But not the Foundation plot .
There is a trend here towards incorporating nuggets of the original book series while writing a completely different story. I mean sword and sorcery and Mad Max stuff, whereas Asimov's was hard sci-fi. Good luck I say, the show will need it.

2021.10.15 22:49 islamvai4 Ohio reports fewer than 5,000 COVID-19 cases as state continues to see decline
Ohio continues to see a decrease in coronavirus cases, with fewer than 5,000 recorded in the last day.
The state reported 4,937 cases on Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Health. A week ago, Ohio reported 6,651 daily cases.
Daily COVID-19 cases have remained below 6,000 for the last week. From Oct. 2 to 8, Ohio reported more than 6,000 daily cases four times.
In the last 21 days the state is averaging 5,242 cases a day. Last Friday the 21-day average was 5,842 cases a day, according to ODH. Ohio is averaging 4,529 cases a day in the last week.
ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff warned Ohioans Thursday that while he’s cautiously optimistic cases will decline moving forward, now isn’t the time to lose focus.
“We have to remain vigilant,” he said.
The number of COVID-19 patients in Ohio hospitals are continuing to slightly decrease. As of Friday, 3,157 coronavirus patients were hospitalized in the state, compared to 3,439 on Oct. 2. The state is seeing similar trends in ICUs and patients on ventilators. ODH reported 924 COVID-19 patients in the state’s ICUs and 621 on ventilators on Friday. On Oct. 2, there were 961 COVID-19 patients in Ohio’s ICUs and 647 on ventilators.
Ohio recorded 290 hospitalizations and 21 ICU admissions in the last day. It’s the first time in four days the state’s reported fewer than 300 daily hospitalizations and fewer than 30 ICU admissions. Last Friday Ohio reported 245 hospitalizations and 10 ICU admissions.
The state’s 21-day average is 251 hospitalizations a day and 22 ICU admissions a day.
Ohio reported 306 COVID-19 deaths Friday, bringing its total to 23,327, according to ODH.
The state updates death data twice a week. Because other states don’t regularly report death certificates to Ohio’s Bureau of Vital Statistics, death data can fluctuate.
Vanderhoff noted Thursday that due to the nature of COVID, hospitalizations and deaths are lagging indicators.
It can take days to weeks after a person tests positive for coronavirus before they may need to be hospitalized. Following a COVID patient’s death, it can be weeks or months before the state can verify whether or not it was due to the virus.
“We may not know the full impact of this surge numerically for some time,” Vanderhoff said.

2021.10.15 22:49 Pudenator We shouldn't have gotten matching tattoos.
Maybe the matching tattoos with my two closest friends wasn’t the best idea. I know that some of you will be thinking “duh, matching tattoos are never a good idea”, but it is something that Lisa, Rebecca and I have wanted to do for a while. We had all agreed on the design in the months leading up to our tattoo appointment; a small birdcage that would be tattooed on the inside on our wrists. We all thought it was perfect and to make it even better, we had managed to get an appointment with ‘Hood-inked’, a pretty exclusive tattoo artist in our area.
We were all nervous, it was both mine and Lisa’s first tattoo and Rebecca’s second attempt at getting one. She was supposed to get a small teddy bear tattooed on her ankle a couple months ago but chickened out, so I guess she wanted to redeem herself and be brave enough for this tattoo. Our appointment was at midday, so by 11:30, we were already in the waiting room, slightly shaking and giggling with one another, probably because of the nerves. We each filled out the required forms before we could actually get inked and at 12:00 on the dot, an older lady came out to meet us.
“Afternoon ladies, I’ll be your artist today. I’ve already got your design drawn up and ready to go, so who’s first?”, the lady said as entered into the waiting room. This lady, who was obviously the artist ‘Hood-inked’, was around sixty years old and she was covered in tattoos. She had long snakes tattooed down each arm, an ensemble of weird symbols and drawings across her chest and a bat tattooed across her neck that looked like a very strange bowtie. She had dark piercing eyes that were staring down at each of us, but she had a sweet, comforting smile. The kind of smile that helped calm my nerves and made me feel like I was in safe hands.
We decided that Rebecca would go first, then Lisa and I would go last as I have a bad habit of putting things off that I am frightened or nervous about. I thought the longer I waited before getting the tattoo done, the less nervous I would feel. I was definitely wrong though, as time quickly flew by and soon it was my turn to receive the tattoo. Rebecca claimed that it didn’t actually hurt that bad and Lisa said that it hurt a little bit, but it was nothing that I couldn’t handle. I didn’t really know how much it would hurt but one thing I did know was that both of their tattoo’s were absolutely beautiful. Each bar of the bird cage was perfectly straight and the curve of the top of the cage was immaculate. It really was a great tattoo and seeing both of theirs made me excited to get mine. I still felt some butterflies as I laid done on the bed inside the studio and the nerves grew as I heard the loud buzzing sound of the tattoo needle but thinking of how it would look afterwards did help to calm me.
Lisa was right, the tattoo did hurt but it wasn’t anything that I couldn’t handle. It felt like a deep scratch on my arm and while I could feel the pain, my body did adjust to it. It didn’t take too long either, maybe half an hour or so, and once it was done it was just as beautiful as the two other tattoos on both of my friends’ wrists. We were all very happy with the finished product and we spent the rest of the day constantly looking down at the inside of our wrists, trying to get used to the small picture of a birdcage that would reside there for the rest of our lives.
That night, the three of us spent the whole evening together, like we usually did. We had some food and then spent the rest of the night laughing and talking together. It was getting late, maybe around midnight, when we first saw the shadowy figure. Rebecca had left to go to the bathroom, so it was just Lisa and I that first saw it. We were both in the lounge room when, out the corner of my eye, I saw something float past the doorway. I turned to ask Lisa if she had noticed anything but, by the look on her face, I already knew that she had. The look on her face was of genuine fear. She had definitely seen something, and she was now frozen and staring at the doorway. She managed to stammer out a few words though.
“D-d-did you s-see that?”, she stammered in a soft whisper, “I-in the d-d-doorway. W-w-hat was i-it?”.
I didn’t exactly know what it was, as I had only seen something out the corner of my eye, but it appeared that Lisa had seen it more clearly. I put my arm around her to try and comfort her and I tried to get her to explain what she had just seen but she sat there, motionless and mute. I then heard footsteps coming from just outside of the lounge room and they were getting closer.
“Rebecca is that you?”, I called out, hoping that it was just her returning from the bathroom. When she came through the door and responded, “Yeah of course it’s me”, I let out a sigh of relief. Rebecca must have noticed Lisa’s scared expression because she instantly asked if everything was okay. I quickly explained to her about the shadowy figure that I had seen in the doorway. We both then tried to comfort Lisa and convince her that it was probably nothing, but nothing seemed to work, she continued to look terrified, and she didn’t speak again.
As all three of us were sitting in the loungeroom, unsure of why Lisa was as scared as she was, I saw it again. The strange shadowy figure. This time though, I didn’t see it out of the corner of my eye, I saw it straight in front of me. It was hovering off the ground maybe an inch or two and it wasn’t human shaped, in fact it wasn’t really any shape at all. It wobbled and contorted in front of us, constantly changing its shape and size, like squid ink floating in water. It had no face and no body; it had no eyes or any features at all. It was just a floating black cloud of what appeared to be ink.
It only appeared in front of me for a few seconds before disappearing again. I now understood why Lisa was looking so scared because I now felt that fear too. I looked over at Rebecca and she still appeared calm and collected, so I assumed that she hadn’t seen what both Lisa and I had seen. As I looked over at Rebecca, I saw it again. Floating just behind her, like a looming shadow, it sat just inches away from her. It began to float closer and closer towards her and before I could yell out to warn her, it struck. It floated over Rebecca and soon she was swallowed into the black cloud, and she was gone; consumed by the blackness. I didn’t know what to, but I managed to stand up and run towards whatever was surrounding my friend. I reached out to try and grab Rebecca and pull her out of whatever this thing was. As I threw my hand into the black ink cloud, I instantly felt a sharp pain fill my hand. It felt like a thousand needles all stabbing my hand at the same time. I retracted my hand quickly and instantly noticed that there was something very different about my hand.
It was completely black with ink. The ink wasn’t covering my hand though, it was inside of it, tattooed into it. The pain I felt must have been this strange ink creature injecting itself into me. It had filled my entire hand with its ink. I quickly moved backwards, in fear, away from this thing. As I got further away from it, it suddenly stopped moving and then, suddenly, it disappeared. I don’t know exactly where it went, but I do know what it left behind. Rebecca’s body was laying on the ground, lifeless. She was covered head to toe in the black ink. It had injected itself into every inch of her skin. I knew the pain I felt through just my hand so I couldn’t even imagine what Rebecca went through. I dropped to the floor, in fear in case this thing came back and also in grief.
Lisa was still motionless, fear still spread across her face. She had just witnessed what I had and now she looked paler than ever and frozen in the one spot. I managed to crawl over to her, and I noticed the small birdcage tattoo on her wrist. That’s when I noticed the small blob of ink that sat inside of the birdcage. I hadn’t noticed it before, but it was there, locked up and sitting within the wire bars. I then looked down at my own wrist and saw that the blob of ink wasn’t present in my tattoo. I did notice something slightly different about mine though. The door of the birdcage was just so very slightly open. It would be hard to notice without looking closely but it was definitely open just a crack. The cage was open, and the small ink blob was no longer inside. The artist had opened the cage. She had marked us all. Then she set this thing free.

2021.10.15 22:49 palkovna A question that has been bugging me lately...
A common sentiment expressed here is that women often get played/strung along for sex because they “go out of their league” and want a far more attractive man commit to them. But how are you supposed to gauge your own level of attractiveness as a woman? How do you decide if a dude is too hot for you before, well, engaging with him? It’s not like there is an objective ranking of all humans that you can just check and see where you stand.
